PART A: INVESTIGATE
1. My service project will attempt to help the homeless community. 2. A) My mom has told me stories about her good friend Laura. Laura has a nephew that is addicted to drugs and has been homeless for years. I decided to interview Laura because she knows how hard it has been for her nephew and she always tries to help him. Laura told me that her nephew is 25 years old and that he was a good person, but things happened in his life that led him to drugs. He has been arrested many times and when he is not in jail, he is homeless. She will hear from him once in a while and will take him out to eat, buy him clothes and toiletries, and get him a room at a motel for few nights. It is hard for her to see him struggle because she knows that he can do better. She told me that whenever she hears from him, she tries to help him find a job but he never sticks around long enough. She told me that donating to homeless shelters is a great way to help. B) The following is from www.endhomelessness.org The Big PictureWhile circumstances can vary, the main reason people experience homelessness is because they cannot find housing they can afford. It is the scarcity of affordable housing in the United States, particularly in more urban areas where homelessness is more prevalent, that is behind their inability to acquire or maintain housing. By the numbers:
These numbers come from Point-in-Time Counts, which are conducted, community by community, on a single night in January every other year. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires communities to submit this data every other year in order to qualify for federal homeless assistance funds. Many communities conduct counts more regularly. The most recent data from HUD can be found in the agency's 2016 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congresss. There are many homeless shelters in different cities across the U.S. and here are some agencies that also help:
C) This is from: The National Alliance to End Homelessness On a single night in January 2015, 564,708 people were experiencing homelessness — meaning they were sleeping outside or in an emergency shelter or transitional housing program.
PART B: PLAN The goal of my service project is to help the community and people in need. I want my family and friends to be involved and feel good about what they are doing. I will need help from my family and friends. I need to collect items to donate to homeless shelter or organization do they can provide for the homeless. I will research the different homeless shelters and different organizations that help the homeless. I will need my mom's help with getting all the donated items organized in bags and boxes and taking them to the shelter. I want my idea to help people see that anyone can help make a difference. Sometimes people just need a little help to get back on their feet and someone who cares that will make their day a little better. I will post on my blog and send "thank you" notes to my family and friends for helping me.

I became interested in helping the homeless after I started research about the different community service projects I could do. I read that in 2016 there were 549,928 people experiencing homelessness on any given night. In the U.S. most of the these people (68%) were staying in some type of shelter and the rest (32%) were unsheltered. That is a lot of people and I knew that these shelters go through a lot of supplies to support the homeless, and I really wanted to help.
During the last several weeks, I have asked my family and friends to go through their closets and gather any items that they didn't need anymore and that are still in good condition. I also asked if they can donate shoes, blankets, and canned foods. Everyone one happy to help and thought it was a great idea. I also went through my own things and found clean t-shirts and shorts that were to small on me. Then my mom and I went through the bags that were donated from family and friends. We separated the items by each category; clothes, shoes, blankets, and food. We then put the separated items in kitchen trash bags and boxes. My goal was to have at least two bags from each category and ended up with more! Next, my mom, her friend Laura, and I looked up different local shelters. There are several in Lake Elsinore, Menifee, and other cities in the Riverside County. We decided to take our donations to a program called Project T.O.U.C.H. (Together Our Unity Conquers Homelessness) located in Menifee, CA. Project T.O.U.C.H. accepts monetary donations, time and energy, hygiene products, and other supplies. They offer transitional housing, winter emergency shelter, police response programs, community food programs, and a resource referral center. They serve single moms, families, veterans, the disabled, and seniors citizens. I have learned that everyone will struggle at some point in their life and that offering help can really save a life. Projects like this can bring a community together and really make a change. I know I can help someone in need and that makes me feel great. helping one another can benefit a lot of lives. OLD KINGDOM (2700 - 2200 BCE) - Pharaoh Khufu
"Age of the Pyramids"
"Period of Reunification"
"Egypt's Golden Age"
Between the four Pharaohs of the three kingdoms, I think that Pharaoh Senusret I was the greatest. He was a strong leader like the other three and achieved great accomplishments, but he also brought art and literature to the people of his kingdom. During this time, the kingdom was peaceful and stable. The craftspeople created beautiful jewelry and artwork. Some of the greatest Egyptian literatures were also created during his reign. There were three Kingdoms of Egypt...Old Kingdom (2700-2200 BCE), Middle Kingdom (2000-1800 BCE), and New Kingdom (1600-1100 BCE). Egypt was known as Powerful Egypt during the times of the three kingdoms. Around 3000 BCE, a few hundred years before the start of the Old Kingdom, the Egyptians developed the Egyptian hieroglyphics.
The construction of pyramids also began during the Old Kingdom. The Middle Kingdom did not see much activity, society seemed stable during this time. However, The New Kingdom saw much more activity, with the conquering of Kush, and turning the people of Kush to "Egyptianized Kushites." A society that was structured like a pyramid was created, with the Pharaoh being at the very top and artisans just above the peasants and slaves. Around 1250 BCE, Moses led The Hebrews away from slavery from the Egyptians and moved the Canaan (Israel). A couple hundred years after the Hebrews moved to Canaan, King David (1004-965 BCE) reigned Canaan. Towards the end of the New Kingdom, the Egyptian power started to decline. In the 700's BCE, Egypt was conquered by Kush and it ruled Egypt for 100 years. In 671 BCE, the Assyrians from Mesopotamia invaded Egypt and kicked out the Kushites around the mid 650's BCE. Then in 24 BCE, the Romans conquered Egypt and tried to conquer Kush. The Romans were not able to take over Kush so they signed a peace treaty. By 70 CE, the Romans destroyed the Hebrew Temple.
From reading about the writing in cuneiform, I learned that earliest known complete alphabet system is the Ugaritic alphabet. Some letters have more than one symbol and each letter represent a different use or sound. I also learned to omit a vowel when writing a word. There were thirty symbols in the system compared to the 26 letters of the english alphabet.
To write my name, Jason, I would use the cueniform letters jsn. My first day of 6th was an exciting and nerve wrecking one. I met my new teachers and classmates that first day and I have been enjoying middle school life so far. From the very first day I realized that being organized is very important. We do this by making and updating a notebook for each class. These notebooks helps us practice and study and are very useful! I think that all of my classes are fun and interesting, including my Social Studies class with Mrs. Mondragon. So far in Social Studies I have read and learned about the early humans or the early Hominids. We learned about how they lived, the environment they lived in, the tools they made, and their migration pattern. Then we studied the people of the Paleolithic Age and Neolithic Age. Now we are reading about Mesopotamia and the rise of the Sumerians! I have included a few pictures of what I have learned so far below. Thank you for reading and I hope you have enjoyed reading my first blog!
