I became interested in helping the homeless after I started research about the different community service projects I could do. I read that in 2016 there were 549,928 people experiencing homelessness on any given night. In the U.S. most of the these people (68%) were staying in some type of shelter and the rest (32%) were unsheltered. That is a lot of people and I knew that these shelters go through a lot of supplies to support the homeless, and I really wanted to help.
During the last several weeks, I have asked my family and friends to go through their closets and gather any items that they didn't need anymore and that are still in good condition. I also asked if they can donate shoes, blankets, and canned foods. Everyone one happy to help and thought it was a great idea. I also went through my own things and found clean t-shirts and shorts that were to small on me. Then my mom and I went through the bags that were donated from family and friends. We separated the items by each category; clothes, shoes, blankets, and food. We then put the separated items in kitchen trash bags and boxes. My goal was to have at least two bags from each category and ended up with more! Next, my mom, her friend Laura, and I looked up different local shelters. There are several in Lake Elsinore, Menifee, and other cities in the Riverside County. We decided to take our donations to a program called Project T.O.U.C.H. (Together Our Unity Conquers Homelessness) located in Menifee, CA. Project T.O.U.C.H. accepts monetary donations, time and energy, hygiene products, and other supplies. They offer transitional housing, winter emergency shelter, police response programs, community food programs, and a resource referral center. They serve single moms, families, veterans, the disabled, and seniors citizens. I have learned that everyone will struggle at some point in their life and that offering help can really save a life. Projects like this can bring a community together and really make a change. I know I can help someone in need and that makes me feel great. helping one another can benefit a lot of lives.
