PART A: INVESTIGATE
1. My service project will attempt to help the homeless community. 2. A) My mom has told me stories about her good friend Laura. Laura has a nephew that is addicted to drugs and has been homeless for years. I decided to interview Laura because she knows how hard it has been for her nephew and she always tries to help him. Laura told me that her nephew is 25 years old and that he was a good person, but things happened in his life that led him to drugs. He has been arrested many times and when he is not in jail, he is homeless. She will hear from him once in a while and will take him out to eat, buy him clothes and toiletries, and get him a room at a motel for few nights. It is hard for her to see him struggle because she knows that he can do better. She told me that whenever she hears from him, she tries to help him find a job but he never sticks around long enough. She told me that donating to homeless shelters is a great way to help. B) The following is from www.endhomelessness.org The Big PictureWhile circumstances can vary, the main reason people experience homelessness is because they cannot find housing they can afford. It is the scarcity of affordable housing in the United States, particularly in more urban areas where homelessness is more prevalent, that is behind their inability to acquire or maintain housing. By the numbers:
These numbers come from Point-in-Time Counts, which are conducted, community by community, on a single night in January every other year. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires communities to submit this data every other year in order to qualify for federal homeless assistance funds. Many communities conduct counts more regularly. The most recent data from HUD can be found in the agency's 2016 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congresss. There are many homeless shelters in different cities across the U.S. and here are some agencies that also help:
C) This is from: The National Alliance to End Homelessness On a single night in January 2015, 564,708 people were experiencing homelessness — meaning they were sleeping outside or in an emergency shelter or transitional housing program.
PART B: PLAN The goal of my service project is to help the community and people in need. I want my family and friends to be involved and feel good about what they are doing. I will need help from my family and friends. I need to collect items to donate to homeless shelter or organization do they can provide for the homeless. I will research the different homeless shelters and different organizations that help the homeless. I will need my mom's help with getting all the donated items organized in bags and boxes and taking them to the shelter. I want my idea to help people see that anyone can help make a difference. Sometimes people just need a little help to get back on their feet and someone who cares that will make their day a little better. I will post on my blog and send "thank you" notes to my family and friends for helping me.
